There is a haunted quality that runs through Brandon Campbell’s work. His music is evocative not only of the Pacific Northwest wildlands where he dwells, but also of inspirations such as Tom Waits and Edgar Allan Poe. Brandon Campbell brings a ghost-filled heart to the waltz. In the time since his last release, Ten From the Galley, Campbell has been painstakingly crafting this new collection of sorrow and mystery. Each track serves as a soundtrack to a dark night tossed at sea or a reverie of a lost love. Pulled aside by a fan one night, Campbell was told that his music was like “Django Reinhardt playing at Tim Burton’s wake.”
For this outing, Campbell knew that he had to build this monster from scratch. Not only has he played all of the instruments on this album himself, he handcrafted a few as well! Recording was done one track at a time and in complete isolation. This solitary approach to creation has birthed a dark and ambitious album that dances along in the shadows. This acoustic album calls forth a feeling of Saudade, a feeling of loss and wistfulness for something that may never return. - CJ Hurtt
